Tumi Travel Kits: the World  with Only a Tumi Bag?

In 2013, Tumi Travel Kits offered an amazing 35 American AAdvantage mile per dollar. I bought a Tumi Tumi expandable bag for $895. This bag was my most expensive, and I also received 31,325 AAdvantage points, which is worth almost $450 today. Even after six years of devaluations, this is still a great return.

Although the miles were great, the purchase changed how I use my Tumi travel kits. It didn’t last very long. After a few use, it started to look shabby. I took it to Tumi and was immediately given an $895 credit.

Although tumi travel kits designed it as an add-on roll-aboard for business travelers, the handle passthrough allows you to slide the backpack right on the top. However, it’s so sturdy that I end up packing it solo on my trip’s tumi travel kits alone, stuffed full of clothes, cameras, and sometimes even shoes.

Rick Steves was impressed by my light load. He also travels with his own guidebooks.

Even if their products use premium fabrics, they still have to make a profit. There are only two options to achieve that: cheap materials and cheap labor.

Tumi does not need to do this and can only use premiums for the products they make. Premium is good for end-users, but it can add significant cost to the overall price.

Tumi is the only company to use TEGRIS material for its travel products.

They didn’t create the material. However, they bought a license which allows them to be one of the few luggage companies that can use it.

Tegris is a thermoplastic composite that has excellent impact resistance and stiffens. This material is lightweight and offers a 2x-15x higher impact resistance than other plastic-type materials.
